Thor: The Dark World - Ages prior, Bor, the father of Odin, conflicts with the Dark Elf Malekith, who tries to annihilate the universe utilizing a weapon reputed to be the Aether. In the wake of overcoming Malekith's powers, incorporating improved warriors called the Kursed, on their home universe of Svartalfheim, Bor shields the Aether inside a stone section. Unbeknownst to him, Malekith, his lieutenant Algrim, and a handful of Dark Elves escape into suspended activity.

In present-day Asgard, Loki stands detained for his war law violations on Earth. In the interim, Thor, nearby warriors Sif, Fandral, and Volstagg repulse pirates on Vanaheim, home of their confidant Hogun; it is the last fight in a war to appease the Nine Realms taking after the reproduction of Bifröst, the "Rainbow Bridge" between domains, which had been annihilated two years prior. In London, astrophysicist Dr. Jane Foster's assistant, Darcy Lewis, now with her own understudy, Ian, takes Jane to a relinquished plant where objects have started to defy the laws of physical science and vanish immediately and inexplicably. Differentiating from the gathering, Jane is teleported to an alternate planet, where she is tainted by the Aether.
